What Is the Difference Between Mold and Mildew?

Mildew is considered an early-stage mold, which means they have many similarities. However, they look different. Mold is typically green or black in color and has a fuzzy appearance. If you find mold in one location in your home, you probably have a larger infestation you’ll need to address. Mildew is usually white or gray in color. It appears powdery and grows flat on surfaces.

Another difference is that mildew forms quickly when the circumstances are right—within 24-28 hours of a surface being exposed to water and moisture. If you’ve had water damage from leaks or flooding, or your basement is damp, or a space or room in your home has high levels of humidity, the potential for mildew to grow is good. And mildew can grow anywhere: on drywall and wallpaper, wood and wood items, cardboard and ceiling tiles, etc. Bathrooms, with their ongoing moisture and humidity, are particularly susceptible, as seen from mildew-lined shower curtains.

Mold can also grow on a damp surface within the same time frame. Tiny mold spores travel through the air and land on surfaces where they take hold and digest organic materials, grow, and spread. Their growth will continue until you have extracted all water and dampness from the area, and thoroughly cleaned up the existing mold.

Our Proven Mold Remediation Process

WARREN CLEANING AND RESTORATION follows a careful, step-by-step process to safely and effectively take care of mold and mildew in your home.

  • We perform a variety of tests and assessments to determine the presence of mold and mildew—which are not always visible to the naked eye—and the extent of the infestation. Our examination includes checks of areas where moisture, dampness, and humidity are a problem. We even search for hidden mold—around windows, in ductwork and wall cavities, and behind wallpaper.
  • The first step to remediating mold is to eliminate dampness at its source. Methods such as ventilation, applying proper insulation, placing fans and dehumidifiers, and even allowing natural sunlight and fresh, dry air in, all help the drying process.
  • To thoroughly clean and treat the mold- and mildew-infested area, we may use dry fog combined with EPA-approved chemical solutions that eliminate the mold and associated odors, and prevent further growth.
  • We clean and restore furnishings and belongings that can be salvaged to the best of our ability and properly dispose of those items that cannot be treated or cleaned.
  • Lastly, we work with you to repair or renovate building structure areas that damaged by mold.

We are licensed, bonded, and insured, and all WARREN RESTORATION professionals work hard to ensure your complete satisfaction.
