Sewer Line Backup Prevention Tips

When it comes to your sewer lines, it’s always better to prevent problems than to deal with the aftermath. A clogged sewer line can cause flooding and kick off a chain reaction of problems in your home. Thankfully, you can avoid sewer line backup by following these tips.

Narrow Your Definition of “Flushable”

Toilet paper is the only paper product that you should ever flush down the toilet. The manufacturers of toilet paper designed it to break down after flushing. Other paper products, while similar, don’t have the same design. Get out of the habit of tossing facial tissue and makeup wipes into the toilet instead of the wastebasket. Feminine hygiene products should also go to the wastebasket. And unfortunately, those flushable wipes aren’t as flushable as you think they are.

Keep Hair Out of Drains

If you have long hair, you’ve probably had to unclog a few drains in your lifetime. Too much hair in a drain can cause sewer backup, especially if multiple family members use the same bathroom. The good news is that you can easily prevent this problem and save yourself some money on drain-clearing products in the long run. Instead of allowing shed hair to run down the drain, toss it into the wastebasket. If your hair is especially fine, soft, or otherwise too hard to catch before it slips through your fingers, you can buy a drain cover. These devices catch hair without stopping water flow. They’re available online and in some grocery stores.

Don’t Forget the Kitchen

When we think of clogged sewer lines, most of us assume that the problem started from the bathroom. Don’t forget about the drain in your kitchen, too. You should be just as careful with the kitchen sink as you are with the bathroom sink. Remember that grease will turn back into a solid as soon as it cools, so avoid pouring it into the sink. Don’t throw any solids into the sink that you could just as easily toss into the garbage.
